Associate Professor Emeritus

Department of Mechanical Engineering

H.F. Machiel Van der Loos received the Ingénieur Mécanicien degree from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (1979), and an Engineer’s Degree (1984) and Ph.D. (1992) from Stanford University in Mechanical Engineering, all in robot interface design. After being principal investigator in assistive and therapy robotics at the Rehabilitation R&D Center of the Palo Alto VA in California for 15 years, he came to the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering at UBC Vancouver, where he was Associate Professor until 2023, conducting research in human-robot interaction and roboethics and teaching engineering design. He is now an Emeritus member of the department.
