
Dr. Patrick Moran

Patrick Moran is a specialist of medieval French literature. He has been at UBC since 2018, after teaching at various French and Canadian universities (Université Paris-Sorbonne, Université Lyon 2, Université Montpellier 3, McMaster University, University of Ottawa, Université Laval). He holds a PhD from the Université Paris-Sorbonne and is an alumnus of the École Normale Supérieure (Paris). His research focuses on medieval narrative genres of the 12th and 13th centuries, primarily Arthurian romance. His work explores the intersection between literary theory (especially reader-response, narrative theory and cognitive poetics) and material philology. He has also published research on fantasy fiction and modern medievalism, and is the author of three fantasy novels and a handful of science fiction and fantasy short stories.

As the International Courtly Literature Society approaches its half-century of existence, it feels appropriate for its next International Congress – which took place at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada) from July 24th to 28th 2023 – to have Redefining Courtliness as its theme.
